‘Think again about holding a bonfire party’, say firefighters

sparkler.jpgFirefighters are urging families to drop any plans they have for a back garden bonfire party on November 5.

West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging them to go to an organised event instead.

Jackie Boyle, Community Fire and Road Safety Manager, said: “We want everyone to have firework fun in safety on Guy Fawkes Night, and the best way of doing that is by going to an organised event.

“We are urging all families to think again about having a back garden party because the best way of reducing injuries on bonfire is by attending a community bonfire and fireworks display. They are safer, have the best facilities and offer the best value for money.

“Guy Fawkes celebrations see an increase in anxiety for older people and pet owners. Attending community events helps reduce this distress.”

“A typical rocket travels at 150mph and a mortar shell will go as high as 200 meters exploding its contents over a wide area so it is common sense to leave fireworks displays in the hands of trained and experienced organisers.”

Carelessness with sparklers, mainly at private bonfires, accounts for many injuries to the face and hands.

“A burning sparkler reaches a temperature of more than two thousand degrees centigrade – 20 times the boiling point of water. Sparklers should never be given to children under five,” said Jackie.

Peter Evans, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection. Said: “Organised community events in West Sussex definitely provide the best value for money for Guy Fawkes Night entertainment. They also ensure families no longer need to risk the dangers of back garden bonfire and fireworks parties.”

Jackie reminds retailers it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18.

“Throwing fireworks in a public place is also illegal - a fine of up to £5000 awaits anyone convicted,” she said.

If you are unable to go to a community firework event, Jackie says make sure you follow the firework safety code:

Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114.
Don't drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.
Keep fireworks in a closed box.
Follow the instructions on each firework.
Light at arm's length, using a taper.
Stand well back.
Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode.
Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.
Always supervise children around fireworks.
Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves.
Never give sparkles to a child under five.
Keep pets indoors. Keep West Sussex injury free on bonfire night
