Wealden Power, an eBook by Roy Henderson
Interview with Roy Henderson, 4'18"
This week, local author Roy Henderson publishes a new eBook on the fascinating history of windmills and watermills in the East Grinstead area.
Entitled Wealden Power, the eBook uncovers the little known story of East Grinstead’s once important corn trade, and the local people who were involved in it. Illustrated with 88 colour and 32 monochrome photographs, the 196 page work is issued in PDF format on CD-ROM.
It is designed to run on computers with PDF Reader software, such as Adobe Acrobat. Wealden Power is offered for sale on eBay or directly from the author (email RoyHend@Gmail.com for details). The price is just £10.00 per copy (post free within the UK/ £2.44 outside the UK).
Dozens of watermills and several windmills once stood within a 10-mile radius of the town. Along with those of East Grinstead, Wealden Power covers mills in Hartfield, Forest Row, Ashdown Forest, West Hoathly, Horsted Keynes, Selsfield, Turners Hill, Worth, Three Bridges, Pound Hill, Copthorne, Felbridge, Outwood, Lingfield, Cowden, Edenbridge, Blackham and Ashurst.
Wealden Power provides a glimpse into the working lives of East Grinstead’s traders and manual labourers over the centuries, and deals with aspects of the area’s history that have been covered only briefly in other local history books. Based largely on primary documents, Wealden Power also includes a section on local mill walks, a comprehensive index, glossary, bibliography, notes and references.
A separate file of relevant windmill and watermill web links is also included on the disc.
Roy spoke to Meridian FM’s Sharon Terry about his research for the Wealden Power eBook and how he thinks that we can learn a lot from the way our ancestors used a natural energy source.
