Meridian FM offered full-time licence by Ofcom

application-signing.jpgMeridian FM chairman Lee Quinn received a call this afternoon from the radio regulator, Ofcom.

The call was to advise that Meridian FM are being offered a licence to broadcast full-time as a community radio station, serving East Grinstead plus the surrounding towns and villages.

The announcement is a culmination of over three years work by the volunteer team at the station. Meridian FM have undertaken five separate 28 day trial broadcasts, which has provided valuable experience for a full-time service. Currently, an internet only service is in place.

Although the team was advised today that the application had been successful, it will be several months before Meridian FM can take to the airwaves. Ofcom, who regulate community radio in the United Kingdom, have to confirm final frequency clearance and other formal paperwork needs to be put into place.

In addition to the formalities, Meridian FM needs to raise funds from grant aid and other sources, to fund equipment such as the transmission system and additional studio items.

As a not for profit community radio station, Meridian FM will be able to raise up to 50% of its income from local advertising and sponsorship, which also provides a valuable service to local businesses of all sizes.

Meridian FM aims to provide live programmes during the day and evenings, with an automated music mix overnight. All programmes will be aimed at the local community, with virtually all member broadcasters living in the immediate area. Transmissions will be on the FM radio band locally and also online via the internet.

It is anticipated that the station will be able to start the full-time service early in 2010.
